Gen-Z

In recent years, Kenya has witnessed a surge in activism and protests led by Generation Z,
the cohort born between the mid-1990s and early 2010s. These young Kenyans are leveraging
digital tools and social media platforms to voice their concerns and mobilize for various
causes. Their activism has been particularly prominent in addressing issues such as police
brutality, unemployment, and government corruption. One notable instance of Gen-Z-led protests
was sparked by the #EndSARS movement in Nigeria, which resonated with Kenyan youth facing
similar issues of police violence. Kenyan Gen Z activists organized demonstrations and online
campaigns to demand accountability and reforms within the Kenyan police force. The protests also highlighted broader systemic issues, including economic inequality and lack of opportunities
for young people. Additionally, environmental activism has been a significant focus for Kenyan Gen Z.
They have organized clean-up drives, tree-planting campaigns, and climate strikes to raise
awareness about environmental degradation and advocate for sustainable practices.
The Fridays for Future movement, inspired by Greta Thunberg, has seen participation from
Kenyan youth who are concerned about the future of their country in the face of
climate change. These protests and campaigns underscore the determination and resilience
of Kenyan Gen Z in fighting for a better future. They are not only challenging
the status quo but also inspiring a broader societal shift towards greater
accountability and social justice. Through their activism, they are redefining
civic engagement in Kenya and demonstrating the power of youth in driving meaningful change.
